Empowering Afghan Women and Children

This festive season, The Sydney Feminists have decided to support a beautiful charity headed by an amazing woman whose story will touch your heart. We hope that you will join us in our Christmas Fundraising Drive to raise money for Mahboba’s Promise and give children and widows in Afghanistan a brighter future for the coming year and beyond. Your donation will go towards educating and empowering children and women, the value of which cannot truly be measured. Please consider giving to someone less fortunate than you this Christmas.

Mahboba’s Story:

In 1979 when Russian troops invaded the home of Afghan teenager Mahboba Rawi, her life changed forever. She was forced to flee Kabul after leading a student demonstration against the occupation. She walked for ten days over the Kyber Pass to escape the threat of imprisonment and eventually came to Australia.

Despite personal hardship including the heart breaking loss of her son in a tragic accident, Mahboba began to successfully raise money and awareness among the Australian community for the plight of widows and orphans in Afghanistan. She called the charity, Mahboba’s Promise.

Since 2001, Mahboba’s Promise has opened 4 Hope Houses which provide education, training and a safe environment to over a hundred children, opened a permaculture training centre in Afghanistan which teaches women to become self-sufficient and have food security; around 250 widows and 200 orphans receive financial support thanks to the sponsorship program; over 2500 girls and boys have benefited from the Schools Promise Project.

How you can help:

During the festive season, we’d for love you to support Mahboba’s Promise through this online fund raising initiative.
Your donations will make a difference:

·$15 gives children textbooks, journals and reading books to widen their knowledge and improve their education

·$50 gives English classes for a semester

·$100 gives a widow seeds, tools and training so she can grow fresh vegetables and herbs for a better diet and produce for barter or income.

All donations more than $10 will receive a Mahboba's Promise: Gifts that Give for Afghanistan card.

Donations more than $50 have a chance to win one of five personally signed copies of Mahboba’s Book, Mahboba’s Promise.

Today in Afghanistan women are still denied the means to earn a living and basic equality. Empowerment and education are key in helping them to them become self-sufficient and confident. Through your generosity we can help provide a sustainable future within a secure environment for disadvantaged women and children.
